This is my story.
I learned to walk near a sea that’s 5000 miles away — in Hamburg, a German port town known as the “Gate to the World”. It’s a creed that changed the course of my life. When I was 23, I moved halfway across the globe to do what many have done before me: Seek my life’s true fortunes in the American West.
It was there where I first read the poet Gary Snyder’s maxim: Nature is not a place to visit. It is home. When I arrived in the wide open spaces of the West, I found my home. I learned to appreciate the landscape as a silent retreat that rewarded talking less. Out there, the quiet introvert in me finally experienced the comfort that not knowing what to say was no longer a flaw but an expression of affiliation and admiration. I felt calm, understood, relieved, sheltered. I felt A Sense of Home. It’s what kindled a lifelong pursuit: A passion to photograph the beauty of the West, but to do so in a way that my images allow you to feel at home, too.
— I am proud to have been named 2022/23 U.S. West Coast Nature Photographer of the Year by Corporate Live Wire —

I didn’t know just how addictive that intimate connection to the land had become until a job had me move to Washington, D.C. I felt so withdrawn from that liberating sense out West that I even made a desperate attempt to turn my tiny downtown high-riser apartment into a log cabin — fake yellow aspen tree, supremely heavy log furniture and a thoroughly annoyed girlfriend included. Yeah… it was a lot. (Don’t worry, the girl still married me.)
Little did I know… that apartment was a layman's foray into what I later found out was a whole niche of much more sophisticated nature-based interior design called Biophilia. It’s a growing movement to design our homes with natural elements, all in an effort to connect inside with our primal longing for nature. It’s a practice as old as time, dating back to the earliest cave paintings. But nowadays, when we spend up to 80 percent of our days indoors, introducing nature into our homes and workspaces suddenly proves to be the ultimate act of self-care.

As I learned more about Biophilic design and the way that bringing nature home boosts our mood and wellbeing, my passion turned into a purpose. It’s what I call A SENSE OF HOME: In a world that seems to spin more out of control by the minute, my timeless, award-winning artwork is designed to be a peaceful retreat within your home or office. It’s a space for your busy mind to unwind and relax. It’s an invitation to visit your happy place, to step into your dreams and get lost in a world of beauty, bravery and wonder — a comfortable escape to what it truly means to be yourself.

BOOK NOW“Inspiration is a powerful force for good in our lives. And there are few places that have inspired more people for centuries to live the life of their dreams than the American West — myself included. I want my artworks to bring that same spirit of dreaming big into your home.” — Lars Gesing
