THE STORY

Stunned into silence, I watched this island sunset. As the warm last rays of sun caressed my tingling skin, I thought of the traditional Hawaiian saying, pa’a ka waha — which translates to “close the mouth.” More than a saying, it is a teaching, a mindset. We can’t practice the art of listening if we incessantly talk. Pa’a ka waha means to be quiet and observe. It is how I choose to spend my days. If we close our mouths and listen — truly listen — relationships grow stronger than we ever thought possible. To listen is to love.
