When my wife Katie was young, she dreamed of one day becoming a marine biologist. While life ended up leading her down another professional path, her passion for marine wildlife never subsided.
Naturally, very soon after we moved to Seattle, we found ourselves on a boat scanning the waters of the Salish Sea for whales. As we stood there on the deck, all smiles, a soft late-summer breeze combing through our hair, the sun reflecting off the water, we had one of those moments of immense gratitude: We can't believe we actually get to live here.
A few minutes later, I created this image, and I've loved it ever since. What it lacks in whales it more than makes up for in reminding us of the value of gratitude.
