THE STORY OF "HEEDING"

What do we do with our finite number of days? Too easy is it to lose sight of the things we love doing most, giving in to the false pretense of an always tomorrow. And then, one day, we wake up, tomorrow came and went, and we ask: Where did all the time go?

This is an uncomfortable but absolute fact: Routine is the enemy of time. We settle in to a day to day, we find what works for us — and then we get comfortable, too comfortable. Routines are the venom that kills creativity and fascination. As a kid, we were always astonished. As an adult, we have to work for the anti-cyclical, to remind ourselves to make room for fascination. It’s a choice, and a privilege to have it. Hang on to an illusion of control, or give up some of it for the benefit of the less formulaic. As you choose, remember this: Fascination has always been the fastest way out of any rut.

More and more days of our lives are dictated by a calendar and an accompanying agenda. They fool us into a false sense of martyrdom, of sacrificing our dreams for the sake of living up to the busyness of it all. But it was Mary Oliver who already knew that “you can fool a lot of yourself, but you can’t fool the soul.” Tell me, isn’t it nature that soothes your soul? So go and do as Whitman did: “I tucked my trowser-ends in my boots and went and had a good time.”

MY ART & YOUR INSPIRATION GIVE BACK

I am a proud member of 1% for the Planet and its mission of protecting our only home. The concept is simple: The land has given me much, so I want to give back. That’s why I have committed to donate 1% of every sale of every artwork to select nonprofits that are working to protect the land shown in your piece. That means, over its life in my gallery, HEEDING will generate roughly $2000 in donations supporting the ROCKY MOUNTAIN CONSERVANCY.
